Obituary of Bob Tyler

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert “Bob” Sterling Tyler announce his passing which occurred on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Saint John, NB. Born in Calais, ME on December 6, 1948, he was the son of the late Harry and Betty (Johnson) Tyler.

After graduating from Calais High School, he enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam War era. After basic training, he was deployed overseas to South Korea. After three years of service, he was honorably discharged, attended Husson College in Bangor, ME and received a degree in Business Administration. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping with Grampie Johnson and spending time at the family cottage on Meddybemps Lake.

Bob met Ingrid while attending Husson College. Over the course of fifty-one years of marriage, they had three children: Jonathan, Steven, and Susan.

After moving to New Brunswick in 1974, Bob worked at Irving Oil as a systems analyst for a number of years before moving to St. David Ridge, outside of St. Stephen. He managed the St. Stephen arena for years before working as an economic development planner for the Passamaquoddy Tribe in Indian Township in Maine. There, he and his colleagues were highly successful in numerous projects improving town infrastructure, such as a transfer station, elder living facility and large scale upgrades to the sewer and water systems. For his work, Bob was recognized by the Indian Health Service out of Nashville, TN and received an award for Tribal Urban Recognition in 2004.

Bob’s work led to travel in many states, including Alaska and the Southwest Four Corners region of the US. Ingrid, and later, Susan, often joined him.

Upon retirement in 2017, Bob and Ingrid moved to Rothesay, NB. Bob was an avid cribbage player and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Special lifelong friends, John and Gail Ross, visited regularly and Bob always looked forward to playing pitch and cribbage. Bob had a deep appreciation for nature and in his final days was eager to go to the garden at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The family would like to thank all the staff of the GEM Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their diligent and thoughtful care of Bob. In addition to his three years of service in the army, Bob worked in the National Guard for several years. His family is very grateful for the care he received from the Veteran’s Administration (VA) in Calais and the Togus Vets Association Medical Centre (VAMC) in Maine.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Ingrid (Knop) Tyler; children, Steven Tyler (April) of Hampton and Dr. Susan Tyler of Presque Isle, Maine; his two precious grandchildren, Eden and Caleb Tyler of Hampton; his brother, Kenneth Tyler of Calais, Maine. Bob was predeceased by his parents and son, Jonathan Tyler.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB where visitation will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The funeral service will follow at 1:30pm in the Reid’s Chapel.
