Obituary of John Ernest Ballem MacMillan

It is with great sadness that the family of John Ernest Ballem MacMillan announce his passing which occurred on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Dr. V. A. Snow Centre, Hampton, NB. Born in New Glasgow, NS on January 22, 1947, he was the son of the late J. Ernest and Florence (Gillis) MacMillan.

John was employed by King Mazda as Parts Manager for over 20 years having to retire due to illness in 2002. John loved reading western novels, watching sports and listening to country music and singing Luciano Pavarotti's music (which we all dreaded). John’s lifelong hobby was harness racing. He owned and trained many race horses with his best friend Elmore White who passed away in 2014.

John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Melda (Bowen) MacMillan; children: Tanya (Patrick) Hunter of Saint John, NB and Brett (Donna) MacMillan of Saint John, NB; grandchildren: Brendan Williams, Ashlee, Braeden and Bailey Hunter; great grandchildren: Aubree, Lyla, Jaxton, and Olive Hunter; sister Joanne (Richard) Drabble of Calgary, AB; sisters-in-law: Darleen (Dave) Horne, Ruth (Dave) Lamb and Lois (Jim) Woodman; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his sister Marie Illos (William) of South Carolina; niece Lisa MacMillan Chamberlain; mother-in-law Olive Bowen; father-in-law Douglas Bowen; and daughter-in-law Patricia MacMillan.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB and will be held privately. Donations in memory of John may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences to the family and charitable donations may be made through: ReidsFH.com

The family would like to thank the staff at the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre as well as Yvonne’s Special Care Home for their years of wonderful care and compassion toward John. Special thank you to Gloria Baird of the Snow Centre for spoiling him with her kindness. Seems Gloria could do anything. Also special thank you to Flavia Clarke of Yvonne’s Special Care Home.
