Cecil Reid chose the quiet community of
Hampton, N.B. as the setting for his budding funeral service career in
1950. Cecil purchased the
local funeral home from Thad Stevens, a business first established in
the mid-1800's by Drake Mabee. A
century and a half later we are only the fifth family to own the firm.
In 1967, Cecil and his wife, Frances,
moved the funeral home across the street to its current location, 1063
Main Street, and it was renovated again in 1988.
Frances received her embalmer's license in 1963, and has worked
at the funeral home as well.
Cecil was president of the N.B. Funeral
Directors and Embalmers Association (NBFD&EA) in 1959-60 and
served as general chairman of the 12th Atlantic Funeral Directors and
Services Convention in 1961.
Cecil and Frances have four children,
Brian, Brenda, Bruce and Brock. Youngest
son Brock, is now president of Reid's Funeral Home. Brock and his wife Barbara both received their Funeral
Director's License in 1983. Brian
and Bruce were both licensed funeral directors and Brian assists when
needed. Brian is an
accountant and Bruce is an RCMP officer.
Brenda's husband Leonard Goobie, who received his Funeral
Director's license in 1986 is employed with the firm making it truly a
family service.
Cecil, now semi-retired, continues to
offer his professionalism on funerals and visitation.
He has seen many changes in funeral service in fifty years.
"All visitations were at the residence and funerals were
always in a church. Now
there are so many options for services a family can choose from."
Reid's have kept pace with all the changes through continued
education.
The Reid's have always supported local
organizations and charities generously and have volunteered their
time whenever needed.
